Filip Kunčer competing shoulder to shoulder with the European elite of the Renault Clio Cup

After 12 races across six race weekends in the Renault Clio Cup series, Montenegrin driver Filip Kunčer has delivered outstanding results in an extremely competitive field, with more than 50 drivers from all over Europe.

Coming from a country without a single professional racing circuit for training, Filip completes all of his preparation and training using a home simulator. Despite this limitation, he has demonstrated exceptional talent, speed, and discipline on some of Europe’s most iconic circuits.

CURRENT STANDINGS:

  • Overall classification: 7th place – just two points behind sixth-placed Colburn
  • Challenger category: 2nd place – also only two points behind the leader
  • Mid Europe Championship: 3rd place
  • Mid Europe Challenger: 1st place

The season began promisingly in Nogaro, France, but during the second weekend in Dijon, an incident caused by another driver’s mistake cost Filip valuable points. Despite this setback, he continued to deliver strong performances — in Spa-Francorchamps (Belgium), followed by the legendary Italian circuits of Imola and Misano, and most recently at Magny-Cours in France.

At Magny-Cours, technical issues occurred during qualifying. At the very start, due to a faulty shock absorber, Filip ran off the track and destroyed two brand-new tires. As the championship regulations are extremely strict — allowing only six new, pre-marked tires per race weekend (two qualifying sessions and two races) — this misfortune cost him both a strong starting position and a chance for a better overall result. When you are outside the top ten in qualifying in such a large and evenly matched field, it becomes very difficult to fight for podium positions or a top-five finish, which is one of Filip’s goals in his debut season.

Nevertheless, together with his teammates from the Milan Competition team, Filip has repeatedly secured strong race results and fast qualifying laps so far this season. In the Clio Cup, this is a true challenge, as more than 40 cars are often on track at the same time, leaving virtually no margin for error.

It is also important to highlight that every circuit Filip has raced on so far — and those he will race on — is completely new to him. Many of these tracks are still part of the Formula 1 calendar (Imola, Spa, Paul Ricard, Monza), while others have been part of F1 history. These are legendary venues where experience and track knowledge are key weapons, which Filip is still acquiring — but he compensates with exceptional preparation, data analysis, and hard work.

The championship is currently on its summer break, which Filip is using for a detailed review of his performances and thorough preparation for the final part of the season.

SIX RACES REMAIN UNTIL THE END OF THE SEASON:

  • Valencia (Spain): September 19–21
  • Paul Ricard (France): October 3–5
  • Monza (Italy): October 17–19 – final and season-ending race

With his performances so far, Filip Kunčer has proven that a driver from Montenegro — without a domestic racing circuit and without the system support available in other countries — can compete shoulder to shoulder with the European elite of the Renault Clio Cup. Passion, dedication, discipline, and an enormous desire to improve make him one of the most exciting names of this season.

We believe the best is yet to come.
